How to get to Granada?

Granada is located just at the point where the Sierra Nevada mountains meet the fertile plain of the vega. Behind it are steep mountains and in front there is flat agricultural land. I suppose it was first inhabited and grew because it was easy to defend from behind and although it is dry in the summer there is always a supply of water coming from the mountain fueled by melting snow, the rich soil in the Vega provided an ample food source. The altitude is 630 metres.

It is accessible:

  • by plain,
  • by bus,
  • by train,
  • by car.

  • By plane

Granada doesn't have an international airport so if you want to fly to Granada you will have to first fly to Madrid (45 minutes) or Barcelona (1 hour). If you take this option you should get your travel agent to book the connecting flight. There are not many flights to Granada, so depending on when you arrive it may be advisable to get a bus or train rather than waiting in Madrid. The nearest international airport is Malaga (see below) the best way to get from Malaga to Granada is by bus.

    By bus

    From Madrid

If you are coming from Madrid you will need to go to "estación del sur"

The nearest tube station to tube station to "Estación del sur" is Méndez Alvaro
The buses go about every hour and if there is a busy day, for example before or after a fiesta they put on more buses according to demand. The usual thing is just to go to the bus station and get on the next available bus. You would be unlucky if you have to wait longer than 2 hours for a bus. Try the Enatcar window. It takes about 5 hours from Madrid to Granada and costs around 13 euros.

The bus company owns a cafe half way between Madrid and Granada where they sell overpriced dried up sandwiches and luckewarm coffee. If this is your first time in Spain don't get depressed Spanish catering is not normally this bad.

    From Malaga

You can get a bus from the airport to Malaga bus station, and from here another to Granada. There is a bus every hour from 7am until 9pm. (except 8pm) The price is about 8 euros. It takes 1 and a half hours. Granada bus station has been moved to just outside of town so you will have to get a taxi or a bus into the centre.
